He struck first in Rohnert Park. Then in February 1992 he raped a woman in Vallejo. In 1996 he dramatically raped a woman in Martinez on Halloween. Then he tied up but did not finally rape a victim in Woodland. In 1997 two women in Davis (January). Then another in Chico (July). In July 2000 he returned to Davis and raped another woman. Then he waited 6 years and raped two women in North Natomas area of Sacramento (October). He never struck in Spring. Police are puzzled by the apparent six-year gap between a rape in Davis in 2000 and last double rape in Sacramento.
Serial rapists sometimes halt their assaults for a period of years because they fear discovery or because their personal circumstances change so they don't feel the urge, said Jack Levin, director of the Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict at Northeastern University in Boston. The Northern California rapist, he said, psychologically tortures his victims. "He tells them he stalks them; he makes phone calls to them later. He's saying, 'I'm watching,'" said Levin, who is not involved in the investigation. "He terrifies his victims so they think, 'Hey, he may come back." "You can speculate forever on that," said Smith, the Davis police sergeant. "Was he in custody? That doesn't seem likely because we'd have his DNA. Was he out of state? Was he inactive? Or were there more attacks ... and we just don't know about them? During his attacks, the man has threatened his victims with a knife or a gun and often wears disguises. After raping two women in Davis in 1997, he was photographed wearing a clear, form-fitting hockey mask while using one of the victim's debit cards at a Woodland ATM He studied his victims for days, perhaps weeks, learning their names, their addresses, their habits. He found when the women would be vulnerable, then attacked them in their homes. During the assaults, some lasting hours, he covered their eyes and mouth with duct tape, bound their hands and ankles, and talked to them in an easy, conversational tone. "The words are the same, the duct tape is the same," Davis Police Sgt. Scott Smith .
Investigators now believe at least nine such rapes and one attempted rape over the past 15 years in Northern California are linked to one man. He struck again last month by raping two women in Sacramento. In his latest attack, Oct. 13,2006, he spent six hours raping two women, ages 24 and 28, in their home in Sacramento's North Natomas neighborhood, Sacramento Police Detective Paul Schindler said. One of the victims walked past his vehicle while it was parked in her garage, after he already had broken into the house and assaulted her roommate. A neighbor's security camera caught the same vehicle as it drove by. Police described it as a 2001 or 2002 white Toyota 4-Runner with silver molding, a moon roof and roof rack. The victims were able to give police their first recent description of the rapist. He has put on 30 to 40 pounds since his attacks began years ago and developed a noticeable pot belly as he has aged. He is described as white, 37 to 40 years old, 200 to 250 pounds and five foot-eight to six feet tall.

The most recent Sacramento victim of the "Nor Cal rapist" came forward Monday to tell others of the crime and plead for the capture of her assailant, a man who has eluded authorities for more than a decade while attacking women across Northern California.
The 24-year-old woman, who read from a prepared statement at Sacramento police headquarters, said the man broke into her North Natomas home on Oct. 13, threatened her with a gun and bound and sexually assaulted her and her roommate for hours.
"Even now, I can still feel the barrel of the gun pushing against my head to my surprise," the woman said. "All I could think about was that I wanted this stranger to just leave my house, the only place where I thought, or we all think, as the safest place on earth."
Police did not release the woman's name. She did not take questions from reporters, although she allowed news crews to photograph her. The Bee does not identify victims of sexual assaults.
The petite woman, who stands about 5 feet tall, said she now wears a small canister of pepper spray around her wrist and sleeps with a stun gun under her pillow. She said she will continue to live this way until the man is caught.
The man is described as white, 37 to 40 years old, 5 feet 8 inches to 6 feet tall, and 200 to 250 pounds. He was seen driving a limited edition white Toyota 4-Runner with a silver stripe along the bottom and tinted rear windows.
Authorities have identified a unique genetic code that links the man to nine unsolved rapes over the past 15 years beginning in Rohnert Park and continuing in Vallejo, Martinez, Davis and Chico before the attack in North Natomas last month.
In at least five of the most recent cases, the victims have been Asian American woman, said Detective Paul Schindler.
Schindler said the rapist speaks to the victims, eliciting details that lead them to believe they were stalked. He has also been described as being polite and even apologetic during the attacks.
Sonney Chong, chairman of the Council of Asian Pacific Islanders Together for Advocacy and Leadership, was one of nearly two dozen supporters who stood behind the victim Monday. He said the recent crime has galvanized the local Asian American community, which is working to warn other young women of the threat and raise reward money.
"For someone to be violated like that ... it set off the alarm in our community," he said. "It seems like everybody is on notice and scared; the sooner we catch this guy, the better."
Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Alert at (916) 443-HELP. A $21,000 reward is being offered.

Police add 10th victim to 'Nor Cal Rapist' case
A woman who was tied up but not raped in 1996 in her Woodland home was likely attacked by the "Nor Cal Rapist," Sacramento police say, adding a 10th woman to the list of victims identified through DNA analysis and investigation.
Meanwhile, Sacramento sheriff's investigators say they are searching for another assailant -- dubbed the "Roaming Rapist" -- who they believe assaulted nine women throughout Sacramento County from 1998 to 2004.
The "Nor Cal Rapist" allegedly raped two Sacramento women in their North Natomas home on Oct. 13, leaving behind evidence that linked him to cases spanning 15 years, police announced Tuesday.
The attacks began in Rohnert Park and Vallejo targeting white women, and the rapist continued to strike in Martinez, Davis and Chico, mostly harming Asian women in their 20s and 30s.
The 1996 Woodland assault does not have a DNA link but fits the rapist's style: He was polite and apologetic to the victim and inquired about her banking situation, said Sacramento Police Sgt. Terrell Marshall. In other cases, the assailant often asked women about their banks or took their ATM cards.
"There are some very striking similarities between the case and ours," Marshall said Wednesday. "We strongly believe that this case is connected to the rape series."
Marshall said officers have urged sexual assault detectives throughout Northern California to comb case files for similar attacks.
Marshall said detectives hope to hear from victims who have not yet come forward. He said many of the known cases were reported by friends and family of the traumatized victims.
"A lot want to keep that a personal secret," he said. "That's the uphill battle we have to fight -- we need people to tell us these things in order for us to stop him from victimizing someone else."
By Wednesday, detectives had fielded 25 to 30 tips from the public and continued the search for the suspect's car: a limited edition, 2001 to 2003 Toyota 4-Runner. The car is white with tinted rear windows and may have a moon roof or roof rack.
The suspect is a white male 37 to 40 years old who is 5-foot-8 to 6 feet tall and weighs 200 to 250 pounds. He has a light complexion, brown spiked hair and a protruding stomach.
A $10,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the "Nor Cal Rapist" was announced Wednesday by the Asian Peace Officers Association.
Sacramento sheriff's detectives know far less about the "Roaming Rapist," who has varied his approach since first striking in 1998, Sgt. Micki Links said.
Links, commander of the sex assaults unit, said the "Roaming Rapist" was tied by DNA to nine cases ranging from Foothill Farms to south Sacramento.
Links said the suspect is polite at times and wields a gun other times, walks and uses different vehicles and targets women of varying ages and races.
"We have four composite drawings of this guy, and none really look alike," she said. "It's an unbelievable series, we're still not able to determine who he is."
That rapist was described in 2003 as an African American man in his late 20s or early 30s, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-8, and 200 pounds.
The "Nor Cal Rapist" is more consistent in his pattern, police say.
Most of his attacks have been late night or early morning break-ins. He was frequently masked and either wielded a gun or threatened that he had one.
He recited personal details of victims' lives to them, indicating that he stalked the single, educated women who live alone or with another female.
In the 1996 Woodland case, the suspect broke into the home of a sleeping 18-year-old woman and bound her the same way he bound other victims, Marshall said.
He pushed against her side, implying he had a weapon, but fled without assaulting the woman.
The 1:46 a.m. November attack came shortly after a Halloween rape in Woodland in which he raped a woman at gunpoint after she mistook him for a trick-or-treater.
In January of 1997, the man bound and sexually assaulted two students in their west Davis home, Davis Police Detective Scott Smith said.
After a 1998 rape in Chico, he returned to Davis in 2000, abducting a student in her car, raping her repeatedly and leaving her bound in the running sedan.
The most recent attack in Sacramento targeted two petite Asian women, Marshall said, and showed consistency with the other cases.
"There's some planning, a level of sophistication he's employing," Marshall said. "Based on the way he's committing crimes, he's very careful."

9 rapes tied to masked stalker - Predator's DNA connects attacks across the region since 1991 -- the latest last month in Natomas.
He posed as a trick-or-treater at the door of one woman he raped; 20 days later he called her to apologize.
He took another for a ride in her own car, raped her repeatedly and left her bound with duct tape. One victim stabbed him, but he was undeterred.
The armed attacker continued, completely anonymous.
Now detectives have pinpointed a unique genetic code that ties the man they have dubbed the "Nor Cal rapist" to attacks targeting nine women.
The rapes began in Rohnert Park in 1991 and ranged to Davis and Chico. He struck most recently Oct. 13 in North Natomas, where he bound and raped two women in a home and became the latest serial rapist to plague the Sacramento region.
Over the past three decades, Sacramento investigators have targeted roughly a dozen serial rapists, including some who were never found despite numerous attacks.
Now, Sacamento police say DNA from the latest attack convinced them they are facing a new serial rapist, which spurred them to contact Bay Area law-enforcement agencies to share every imaginable detail about the cases -- except the one detectives need most.
"Unfortunately, we have everything on this guy but who he is," Sacramento Police Chief Albert Najera said Tuesday. "We have a lot of people working on this."
Police said the serial rapist tends to stalk and target single, petite Asian women in their 20s and 30s.
The rapist usually wears a mask, blindfolds his victims and says he has a gun or displays one, said Sacramento Police Detective Paul Schindler.
Last month, a Sacramento victim's blindfold slipped during an assault, and she was able to provide enough of a description for police to produce a sketch. He is described as white, 37 to 40 years old, 5 foot 8 inches to 6 feet tall, 200 to 250 pounds with a protruding stomach.
Vigilant North Natomas residents -- one with a garage-mounted camera -- spotted the vehicle the attacker used: a white Toyota 4-Runner with tinted rear windows.
Detectives called on the public Tuesday for help in identifying the rapist, noting that serial stranger-rape cases are very rare.
"This guy is a sexual predator. He uses force, he uses a gun, and he has emotionally torn apart all of our victims," Schindler said at a news conference at Sacramento police headquarters. "Someone out there knows who he is ... We need your help to find this guy."
Schindler said he plans to follow tips from the public and comb through reports from other agencies, seeking clues to the rapist's identity. He said he will re-interview victims, seeking commonalities that might reveal how the rapist targets them.
"He preys on people, and there's no real pattern of it that I can see," Schindler said. "I can't figure out where's he's going to strike next."
Over the years, Schindler said the rapist has carefully planned his attacks, yet he has not grown more violent, despite earlier incidents in which victims injured him. One whacked him with a lamp in Vallejo in 1992, and another stabbed him with scissors in Chico in 1998.
Schindler said the rapist's statements to victims indicate that he has stalked them and knows their routines. His words have also conveyed that he has the fantasy of having a relationship with them -- he is polite and apologetic.
A rapist is motivated to exert power over his victims, said Jack Levin, director of the Brudnick Center on Violence and Conflict at Northeastern University.
In addition to harming women physically, Levin said, this rapist frightens women by revealing information gleaned from stalking.
Levin said the fact that the rapist is polite indicates that he feels the bit of empathy that separates rapists from killers.
"Some (rapists) are remorseful and feel guilty when they do the wrong thing, but they have an excessive need for power that overrules any conscience," he said.
The rapist's apparent remorse was most apparent after a rape on Halloween in 1996 in Martinez, said Martinez Police Detective Sgt. Gary Peterson.
Peterson said the rapist knocked on the door of a 38-year-old single Asian woman who mistook him for a trick-or-treater. The man raped her at gunpoint.
Twenty days after the attack, the rapist called the victim at work and apologized to her. Detectives were unable to trace the call, Peterson said, and the woman did not see his face.
On Jan. 25, 1997, the rapist entered the Davis home of two 29-year-old Asian women at 4 a.m., binding both students and raping them in their home, said Detective Sgt. Scott Smith of the Davis Police Department.
The attacker threatened one woman into handing over her ATM card and access number. He was caught on an ATM camera later at a mall in Woodland -- providing an initial clue to his identity.
Smith said DNA did not tie the 1997 case to the others, but detectives made the link based on similarities in the rapist's manner in a 2000 case in Davis.
"With both cases, he had fairly extensive conversations," Smith said. "After his initial nervousness, he talked on a wide range of topics and became calm."
In the second Davis case, the rapist attacked a 22-year-old student who was doing laundry at 11:30 p.m. in an apartment complex where many students lived.
The rapist bound the woman, put her in the back seat of her gold Toyota Camry and assaulted her repeatedly.
He returned her, bound, to the area of the apartment with the keys in the ignition and the car running, Smith said.
The woman was able to break free and drove straight to the Davis Police Department with duct tape still clinging to her arm.
Most recently, the rapist broke into a home in North Natomas, raping 24- and 28- year-old women.
Detectives said more cases may emerge from instances in which DNA was not collected or victims have not yet reported attacks.
Levin predicted that the Nor Cal rapist will produce widespread awareness and fear.
"The number of these serial rapes may not be large, but their influence is disproportionate to their numbers," Levin said. "What he does is he terrorizes a community."

Unsolved sexual assaults could be tied to "Nor Cal" rapist
They have his DNA, but the identity of the man dubbed the "Nor Cal" rapist by police agencies throughout Northern California remains a mystery.
The suspect is known to have sexually assaulted at least nine women, including a 21-year-old Chico resident in July 1997.
Chico police Sgt. Dave Barrow said his department is looking back at other unsolved rape cases from up to a decade ago to see if the crimes have similarities to those committed by the suspect, now in his late 30s or early 40s.
In the Chico rape, Barrow said, the masked suspect entered the victim's West Sacramento Avenue home through an open window about 4 a.m. He reportedly woke her up, then brutally raped her.
Barrow said the suspect told the woman he had a gun, but she never saw it.
Barrow said police circulated a sketch of the suspect in 1997, but it brought no meaningful leads.
The rapist has struck in several communities throughout the Bay Area and Sacramento Valley, with known attacks going back to 1991.
The Chico rape is the farthest north of his crimes, officials believe. Other attacks have taken place in Davis, Sacramento, Martinez, Rohnert Park, Vallejo and Woodland, where an attempted rape occurred.
His first two victims were white, but the seven tied to him since 1996 have all been Asian, or of Asian descent, as was the case in Chico.
Barrow said the victim worked in Chico, but was not a college student.
"He was doing some type of stalking, some type of selection process," Barrow said. Officials with other departments looking for the suspect have made similar observations about the man, saying he learned the habits of his victims before he struck.
Police are puzzled by an apparent six-year gap between a rape in Davis in 2000 and the latest assault tied to the man — the rape of two women at the same residence in the Natomas area of Sacramento Oct. 13.
In that case, the man entered their residence while one roommate was home and raped her at gunpoint. He raped the other woman upon her return to the home. Officials said the man spent six hours with the women, who were bound with duct tape.
He wore a ski mask in the latest attempt, but on Halloween in 1996 he sexually assaulted a Martinez woman while wearing a skeleton mask.
The suspect has apparently never been arrested, which Barrow said was unusual in his experience. "With a serial predator, you'd think he'd have been arrested somewhere before. Apparently not."
Police believe he may have made enough mistakes in his most recent known attack to get caught, however.
Victims provided a good physical description of the suspect, leading to a sketch that has been widely seen over the past few days, and has already produced numerous tips to law enforcement.
A neighbor's security camera in Sacramento captured the suspect driving away.
In some instances, the suspect contacted his victims by telephone after the rapes. In one case, he reportedly called a woman to apologize for stealing her ATM card.
The suspect is described as white, 5-feet, 8 inches to 5-feet, 10 inches tall, between 250 and 300 pounds, with brown, spiked hair, and is about 38. He is clean-shaven with pale skin, and has a protruding belly, which was not reported by his earlier victims.
He is thought to be driving a white 2001-2003 Toyota 4-Runner with tinted rear windows, a roof rack and moon roof.
"Mostly, we're asking for help from the public," Barrow said. "That's what will probably break this case."
Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call Chico police at 897-4900, or their local police department.

Press Democrat, The (Santa Rosa, CA) November 16, 2006
A Sonoma County woman who is believed to be the first victim of a serial rapist said Wednesday that police initially doubted details of her story that are now being cited as key aspects of the case.
The woman said the man who broke into her Rohnert Park home in 1991 was armed, soft-spoken, apologetic and apparently had been stalking her for some time. When she reported those details, she said, Rohnert Park police said it was not possible . ``I said, `It doesn't seem believable to me either,''' she said. ``But this is what happened.'' Sacramento police announced this week that they are looking for a serial rapist who has attacked at least eight Northern California women, beginning with the 1991 rape in Rohnert Park. The nine attacks were linked last month by DNA samples after a double-rape in Sacramento, police said. In detailing the case, investigators said the suspect has been armed or claimed to have a gun in each of the attacks. He also has been apologetic and appears to have stalked his victims, police said.
The first victim, now 36 and living in Petaluma, said she was unhappy with the police response to her complaint in 1991.
``They were just so awful to me,'' she said. ``They were awful to my family. If they had done a more thorough job, perhaps they would have caught him.'' A Rohnert Park police lieutenant was quoted in The Press Democrat in 1992 as saying they had concerns about the woman's credibility. On Wednesday, Rohnert Park police defended the department's handling of the investigation, saying all means available were used to try to identify a suspect and every lead was exhausted before the case was declared inactive.
Sgt. Joe Ferronato said officers compared DNA evidence with an FBI database and tried to match fingerprints taken from the scene to others on file. Samples from three possible suspects were tested, he said.
But there were no matches until last month, when the connection was made by police investigating the double-rape in Sacramento. Now, with the revelation that the man went on to rape others and remains at large, the woman said police appear to be taking her story more seriously. She said police apologized for their handling of the case and vowed to do better.
``It's something I've thought about every day for 15 years,'' the victim said. Ferronato said he couldn't comment on how the woman was treated 15 years ago.
But he said the case has been reopened to look at new evidence, including a sketch of a possible suspect and a vehicle description. ``We're expecting some breaks in this case soon,'' he said. ``We have some specific leads we're working on now.''
Sacramento police and detectives from other Northern California cities where the rapist has struck hope they can work together to make an arrest. Sgt. Terrell Marshall, a Sacramento police spokesman, said it is possible that more cases will emerge.
On Wednesday, he said police in Woodland had linked an attempted rape and robbery to the ``Nor Cal rapist.'' And he said police are looking at two rapes that happened in the Sonoma Valley in 1991.
``We're trying to get this guy off the streets before he victimizes someone else,'' Marshall said.

I have read the Davis Police reports and there is nothing that really helps in the form of investigative leads. The leads they did have been run to there conclusion. But I am reviewing them with a fine tooth comb in my usual manner I see if I can find anything and will post if I do.

Sonoma Rapes, RP Attack linked?
As Sonoma police hope for a break in the rapist-robber rapist-robber rapist-robber case, a Rohnert Park woman who believes the same masked man attacked her is urging that women everywhere in the county be especially cautious.
The woman, aged 21, said the recent assaults on two women In east Sonoma were eerily similar to the robbery and rape that happened to her last June. As with the Sonoma women, she said, she was tied up, assaulted and robbed in her own home by a man wearing a ski mask.
She also believes she was stalked. Authorities say it appears at least one of the Sonoma victims was watched for weeks before the robbery and rape. "He knew where I worked," the Rohnert Park resident said. "He said he had been watching me for two months." Victim sees similarities in assaults She said the man who held her for nearly three hours, raping her three times, also threatened her with a revolver.
Sonoma police have avoided the question of whether the suspect in their cases was armed.
Cpl. Tom Kearn said that the Sonoma suspect has carried but not wielded some sort of weapon. Police in both cities say they're not satisfied that the alleged attack in Rohnert Park and the two in Sonoma were the work of one man.
"I note a lot of similarities," Rohnert Park public safety Lt Bob Williams said after comparing the rape reported in his city with those in Sonoma. "But I also notice some major dissimilarities," Williams said the case is still open, though his department has some questions about the alleged victim's credibility. "There are some parts of her story that were hard to believe," he said.
Whether or not the alleged attacks in Sonoma and Rohnert Park are the work of one man, there are now three Sonoma County women all of them single who've told of being sexually assaulted at home by a man with a mask. All of the victims described the attacker as a white man in his 20s or 30s, a few inches shorter than 6 feet tall and of average weight.
Kearn has described the suspect as "soft-spoken;" the Rohnert Park woman said the man who raped her was guilt-ridden, "overly gentle and overly kind." Sonoma police said Tuesday they have many leads but no Immediate prospects for solving the pair of robbery-assaults robbery-assaults robbery-assaults that are frightening the city of 8,000. "A lot more phone calls are coming in," said Lt David Cain. He added, hopefully, "A lot are beginning to correlate with each! other."
At 7 p.m. Thursday at Sonoma Valley High School, Sonoma city leaders will convene the second town hall meeting on the crimes. Cain and Kearn, who are working the case full time, said they are nearly certain that both of the Sonoma attacks were committed by the same man.
Those crimes occurred within four weeks and eight blocks of each other.
Sonoma police said the same man might have attacked and attempted to rape a 47-year-old eastside woman two years ago. That time, the assailant was chased off by the victim's dog.
